All About Walls | By Joan Adamson, Knilans' Interior Designer

When we talk about design, we often think of your room or home as a blank canvas - but this is especially true for your walls! The walls in a room, or throughout your home, can be more than a paint color, and more than a place to hang your family photos! Your choice of color and material can make a room look bigger, brighter, airier, or cozier. And paint is just the beginning: wallpaper, tile and more can add pattern and character to the walls of your home. Wherever you are in your room or home redesign, your walls are equally promising as a first step or a finishing touch.

Choosing Colors

There are so many beautiful shades to choose from. Colorful walls can add a bright pop, and neutrals can be a subtle backdrop for fabrics, rugs, or art. If you are painting a wall, rather than adding a wall covering, you have some flexibility, as repainting a wall is easier and more cost-effective than replacing the whole surface. A Knilans’ designer can help you find a color that complements your favorite pieces. The right paint color can truly re-invent a space, and is often just what you need to tie a new design together.

Wallpaper

WALLPAPER... that word sends dread through anyone who’s had to strip away old paper, and excitement through those who love the idea of a pattern or interesting texture on an accent wall… or an entire room! Wallpaper can be applied in a more permanent way with adhesives, but many brands offer papers that are self-adhering, making them quick and easy to remove. If you’re not ready to commit to a permanent pattern or want to try out the latest trend, these self-adhering options are a great choice. We have some great brand recommendations that will stay in place without drooping or peeling.

Tile Walls and Backsplashes

Kitchen backsplashes, entryway floors, bathroom floors and showers have gone from utilitarian tile to artistic statements. Colors, mosaics, Moroccan patterns, subway tile, and combinations of any and all, have really changed the look of those areas of the home! Work with a designer to choose a tile that fits your style and your needs. Knilans’ is also happy to recommend contractors who will ensure your tile work is beautifully done and stands the test of time.

Wall Surfaces

Reclaimed wood has been popular lately, and for good reason! It can add texture and character to any wall, and preserves a bit of history.

In using new and unique wall surfaces like resin wall panels, shiplap, or more established surfaces such as wainscoting, wallpaper, tile or stone, you can add visual interest, and lean into your period of choice; adding more of your own personal style as well!

Wainscoting, shiplap, resin wall panels, and tile are all a bit more permanent, using construction adhesives, nails, or staples. They can be a great way to add an additional layer of interest and personality. Plan well; they are certainly more of a commitment, but the “WOW”, can be transformative!
