Your Guide to Mid-Century Modern Design

Mid-century modern furniture is a favorite in design circles, and popular with many people - but what is it, and how can you incorporate its design principles into your home? Knilans’ Designer Mary Ellen Cunningham has the answer to these questions and more in your complete guide to mid-century modern design.

What is mid-century modern?

Mid-century modern is an American design movement in interior design, architecture, product, graphic design, and urban development that was popular from 1945 to 1969 after World War 2. The combination of new technology, new materials, and new financial prosperity laid the groundwork for this movement to flourish.

The distinguishing features of this style are a classic, understated look and clean lines. Form follows function in mid-century modern design - the look of a piece is influenced by its usefulness. The lines are uncluttered and sleek with both organic and geometric forms.

Unlike more ornate styles, mid-century modern design derives interest from simple shapes and, often, the juxtaposition of different and sometimes contrasting material. These included classic materials like wood, metal, and glass, as well as nontraditional materials like vinyl, plywood, plexiglass, and lucite. A vast range of colors are used: neutrals, bold shades, and black and white all have their place in mid-century modern design. If you’re looking for famous examples, Herman Miller and Charles and Ray Eames were well-known designers of this era, and can give you a look at mid-century modern design at its best! Mid-century modern furniture became popular again in the 1990s and is still going strong.

How can I add a mid-century flair to my home?

A mid-century space is truly a relaxing environment. If you are looking to incorporate the mid-century into your home for the first time, we suggest starting with whatever pieces the room might be lacking.  If you are in need of a cocktail table, look for one that works with your space. Any starting point is good and building piece by piece is a great way to create a unique space. Don't be afraid that you’ll clash with pieces from other periods! The minimalism of mid-century furniture blends well with other styles of home decor. Accessorizing with plants, floor pillows, lamps, and candlestick holders are great ways to add interest to space.
