Meghan Lake, Interior Designer
Meghan Lake is an Interior Designer with Knilans’ Furniture and Interior Design. Meghan got her start in design while attending Iowa State University for a Bachelors of Architecture and later a Masters in Architecture from Pratt Institute. She worked at an architectural historic preservation firm in New York City getting a taste for smaller interiors projects on the side while working large, commercial design projects and then eventually worked as an Interior Designer in Denver Colorado before moving back home to Davenport. Her background in architecture has helped guide her skills in interior design and she loves to work one on one with clients to curate beautiful, livable spaces that perfectly match their needs and wants.
How did you get your start as an Interior Designer?
I got my start in Interior Design as an architect working in a full service historic preservation architecture firm in New York City, where I got to work on a few smaller commercial interiors projects alongside the larger commercial projects. I discovered I loved the selection of materials and fabrics and smaller scale design. It felt more intimate and personal when working in interiors over architecture. When I moved to Denver, I eventually worked for Ethan Allen where I was able to flex my interior design skills (my architecture background really helped me out!) I appreciated working in commercial architecture in New York, but I had a strong desire to work for residential clients on interior design projects that were a much smaller scale and scope. I love the ability to work closely with clients on plans that are more personal in nature than large commercial projects.
What is your goal when you work with a client?
My goal when working with a client is to connect personally with them. Connection to a prospective client is the first and best way to get to know what their needs and desires are for the projects they are working on. It also allows me to get to know their personal style and personality that directs my strategy in helping them solve their design problems and or get exactly what they were desiring on their wishlist.
What is a current design trend that you love?
The current design trend that I love most is to embrace your own personal style instead of selecting a style in which to follow. This requires people to really get to know themselves, their everyday movements and patterns, desires, lifestyle, and way of occupying their home. I think that understanding your own design style counteracts beige and grey colored homes that are everywhere.
If you had to pick a favorite room in your home, what would it be and why?
My favorite room in my home is my living room. It’s where I have my favorite leather chairs where I read and enjoy my fireplace. It’s cozy, like a big warm hug. It’s designed with blues, dusty pinks, and tans with a tweed sofa, velvet pillows, and leather chairs.
What is your favorite thing to do in your free time?
I love exercising with my 2 Australian Shepherds and I also love to make wreaths and embroider in my spare time.
