We asked all of our designers to tell us more about themselves:

How did you get your start in Interior Design?

My father had a carpet/design store in Dewitt, so I grew up in the world of interior design. After moving to Naples, Florida I studied from the New York School of Interior Design and was accepted into the American Society of Interior Designers and the Interior Design Society. I worked as an Interior Designer in Naples for 30 years and received the Sand Dollar Award. I later moved back to Iowa after marrying a man with whom I went to high school. I accepted a job offer at Knilans’ in 2020.

What is your goal when you work with a client?

The most important goal I have when working with a client it is getting to know them, their family, lifestyle, priorities and needs. After learning what vision they have for their home, I help to curate their house into their home. Their happiness is always my goal.

What is a current design trend that you love?

Texture, texture, texture…you cannot have enough! I love the use of exposed beams on ceilings and wood treatments and textured grass cloth on walls. Using organic materials helps bring the outside in. Also using cypress wood bowls filled with succulents and teak artifacts. Rattan, cane, sisal and jute are beautiful when applied to wall treatments, rugs and furniture. I love seeing stones and geodes incorporated into backsplashes and countertops. Bamboo flooring is not only beautiful, but is also environmentally friendly, sustainable, and is harder than oak.

If you had to pick a favorite room in your home which would it be and why?

My favorite room is our open concept great room. I can enjoy South, East, West and river views all from my sofa. The room incorporates many textural elements, including live greenery and a brindle hide laying over a jute rug all supported with hickory wood floors, charred beams and fireplace mantle. It is a great room not only for entertainment, but also to sit with a cozy fire watching the snow come down while the grandkids (plus Nana and Papa) are having a great time.

What is your favorite thing to do in your free time?

My favorite thing to do is when I “Nana Beck” (as my grandkids call me) get to Facetime with my grandkids! That is if I am not visiting them, of course. Otherwise, I enjoy listening to music, concerts, dancing, walking or just sitting outside having a bonfire while hanging out with my husband, kids, grandkids and friends.

“My husband and I worked with Becky at Knilans’ for close to 2 years. What started as a small project, ended up as a complete main level makeover and refresh. Becky helped with coordinating a contractor for pocket doors and she helped with picking out paint colors, furniture, flooring, tile and accessories. She also provided a list of companies she recommends for tile work, painting, reupholstering, etc. It was an absolute pleasure working with her and we LOVE our new space! We would have never come up with these ideas on our own so we greatly appreciate her expertise and willingness to push us outside of our box! We would highly recommend giving her a call!” Kelly, Bettendorf, IA
