Windows and Window Treatments

As we enter a room, usually the first things that we notice are the windows and the way they are treated. Windows have the practical purpose of light and ventilation. Architecturally, they break up the monotony of a room, both in the interior and on the exterior of the home. Newer homes feature magnificent expanses of glass and often these windows are not treated with fabric. There is a protective film that can be applied to the window for light control if you so desire.

Practical Concerns When Choosing Window Treatments

There are many things to consider when choosing your personal design, so before moving forward with your project, get your interior designer involved to help with advice. Consider how much light will play a role in your decision.  Do you need a treatment to help with sound absorption?  Are you looking for simplicity and function, pure decoration, or something in between? Measurement and inside or outside mount application of your treatment is important to determine before deciding on your design. Sketches to scale can confirm your preferences. Installation of your treatments can make or break the look of your treatment. Most window treatments are available with motorization using many types of technology. Your designer can walk you through these options.

Window Treatment Styles

If you prefer a simple design, there are treatments available in sill length, apron length or floor length. These designs are endless and provide light control, insulation, texture, or softness all in one treatment! Your designer can further detail the options that are available to you.

If you prefer a more embellished design, a trend is to layer two treatments. For example, a shade or blind is shown underneath a pair of stationary side panels to soften the window. These panels can be hung on a simple or decorative rod. This application can work in many settings adding texture, color or pattern.

Not often, but a few times a year, a client with a period home will request treatments where trims, tassels and fringe may be applied to layered treatments of sheers, panels and swags and jabots! These designs, especially, form an element in the color scheme and may be used to extend the color of the walls or accentuate it with a contrasting color, texture or pattern.
