Joan Adamson, Interior Designer

Joan Adamson is an Interior Designer with Knilans’ Furniture & Interiors Design. Joan began her career in Interior Design, and the furniture industry, more than 30 years ago. She attended Truman State University, in Kirksville, Missouri, where she obtained her degree in Art Education. With her degree in Art, and years of design experience, Joan has a greater ability to visualize a project completed; from space planning, to the selection of the furniture pieces and window treatments, flooring and lighting, to the finishing touches of art, and accessories.

“The most rewarding part of interior design for me, is to work as a partner with my client; to achieve a space that’s inviting, a bit unique, and feels like home!” - Joan

We asked all of our designers to tell us more about themselves:

How did you get your start as an Interior Designer?

I have a degree in art education, and while looking for an interim job, I decided to apply as a manager of a local art store; the position was filled. However, the owner also had an interior design shop, thought I would be a good addition, and would train me. I guess fate knew better!

What is your goal when you work with a client?

To ask questions, to listen closely to their answers, and give the client something that is classic, a bit unique in some way, and feels like home to them!

What is a current design trend that you love?

I’m not a huge fan of a “trend”; don’t want to look back in 5 years, and feel like I made a choice that dated itself, but I do love the Moroccan tiles, for floors and backsplashes. I also really like the use of black on trim, doors, and window frames, we’re seeing a lot of both; very striking!

If you had to pick a favorite room in your home, what would it be and why?

My husband and I recently moved to a different house.  After about 32 years in the previous house, we were looking for a change!  My favorite room in our new home is the family room, kitchen, and eating area combo.  It’s the most open part of the home and where we find, we gather for those family events, like our grandson’s birthday, and the holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas.  I love having a fireplace, and a larger kitchen!!!

What is your favorite thing to do in your free time?

Easy, I love to cook! Cooking gives me a similar creative outlet to design. It’s a great sense of accomplishment when I’ve made something that tastes great, and the plating looks beautiful as well!

“The best decision we ever made was going to Knilans’ and asking for Joan Adamson. Joan had just completed the interior design work on a relative’s home. It was truly stunning. We were ready to replace our old worn out furniture and give our living spaces a make over. We had never used an interior designer before or been to Knilans’. We knew Joan was the designer who could do it and she had our complete trust right from the beginning. She had the knowledge, experience, design magic, the touch, the insight, the vision, or call it what ever you want... She's got it and knows how to use it. Joan gave us rooms to live in and enjoy… It still takes my breath away every time. I could not visualize it in the beginning, but Joan always smiled and said " it will be beautiful". She was right…If you want to do it right the first time, go to Knilans’ and "Ask Joan". That's what we did. To us, Knilans’ is the place you find HOME. It’s our Home Place.” Tammy & Jim, East Moline, IL
