Tim Schlicksup is the Owner of Knilans’ Furniture & Interior Design.
My history with Knilans’ has been life-long as my parents Pete and Judy Schlicksup bought the store from the Knilans’ family 2 years before I was born.
By the early 1990s, my dad would have me pushing a broom in the back parking lot, un-packaging product, and completing other small tasks around the store. During the summer months of high school and college I assisted in the warehouse and on deliveries.
In May of 1999, I graduated from Iowa State University and then started my career with Goodrich Aerospace. I spent 5 years with the company and held positions in manufacturing and quality engineering, procurement, production management, software implementation and finally technical sales. My vision was to climb the corporate ladder and make it to the top. In 2004 that vision changed. While I was trying to schedule a meeting with the VP of the Commercial Transport division I learned that a big job in a big corporation wasn’t going to be a good fit for me. He had shared that his schedule was so busy that he had not made it to a single one of his son’s ball games. That remark left quite the impression on me, as I remember my parents making it to nearly every ball game I ever had.
As luck would have it, that very same week my parents called and told me that they were thinking about a succession plan. Nothing was certain, but they asked if I would be interested in buying the store. The timing was perfect and my vision was clear, so I made a change and began working at Knilans’ October 4, 2004.
After 6 years of working side-by-side with both my Mom and Dad, we completed a purchase agreement in January of 2010. I am absolutely blessed to have had the opportunity to work so closely with my parents and carry on the traditions of our company. Quality products, personal service, and customer satisfaction are core elements of our brand. Yet my absolute favorite part of this company is the amazing people that make it happen. You won’t find a better team anywhere!
